Joseph D. Kieffer graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1971 with a major in History and a minor in English. After graduation, he joined the Congressional staff of Congressman Peter Freylinhuysen (N.J) in Washington, DC as a legislative aide and then Congressman William Cohen (ME), as a press secretary.
Mr. Kieffer attended American University Law School (Washington College of Law). While at American he was on Law Review and clerked on the U.S Tax Court, graduating in 1976. Mr. Kieffer began his legal career at the civil firm of Gould, Merritt and Burke, where he handled litigation until 1988. He subsequently accepted a position as an associate attorney at the workers’ compensation defense firm of Kegel, Tobin and Truce. Mr. Kieffer became a Partner at the Kegel firm in 1994 and was elevated to Managing Partner of the Los Angeles office, and President of the firm, in 2018.
Kegel, Tobin & Truce ceased operations in June, 2023. Mr. Kieffer accepted his current position with Altman, Blitstein & Blinder in July, 2023. Mr. Kieffer brings years of experience in handling all aspects of workers’ compensation litigation, including expertise in complex matters involving coverage, LC 132a and serious and willful claims. He has a well- established reputation throughout the workers compensation community.
Mr. Kieffer has been an avid runner for almost 40 years, but his greatest joy would be his two sons, JD and Colin, who are now working in Chicago and New York.
